You do not highlight the “most recent” version of a publication (“Fried Frank Matters”) on the home page and have it be from Fall 2004 (review date is February 24, 2006). The site reminds me of some homes I visited when looking at real estate a number of years ago. You know the ones. The outside looks great. The inside is circa 1972—although things seem to work. Either this site is in redesign or they tried to just put a fresh coat of paint on the exterior. They do have the flash and flashy recruiting section. Put some of that dough into the real site. However, much of the site is still being updated, and the content is better than average. A fixer-upper.

It is always a pleasure to see progress on sites like these over the years. Last time around, they were heading in the right direction. And the firm continues along the right path. While not every page layout is the greatest to look at, the overall themes and data are in place. I particularly like having things like “case specific information” for circumstances that warrant such a page. Still room to improve and my guess is it will be another step better in ’08.

The “knowledge center” has a lot of really old knowledge. How about throwin’ me some knowledge—from the last year or so? Archive the old. Maybe this site review is just a victim of following Calfee.com, which seemed so much fresher. Otherwise, the usual basic law firm web site. Based solely in Michigan, there is room for greater creativity in your message and approach.

It happens to be that I review PW immediately after Willkie, which means the home page looks quite flashy. The big NY firms have all improved on the web over the last two years, but basically caught up to 2004. In 2008, they will catch up to 2006. If that makes any sense. Anyway, they are all still way richer than I am, so who am I to talk? Although, I’ll take nights and weekends to myself over the cash. My biggest wish for the home page is to unscroll the headlines and have them appear standing still. The same name/rank complaint for associates as with a bunch of NY firms. I liked highlighting the client CLE programs. I’m not sure why the “contact us” page was not loading on site review day, but it was not.

While I’m not totally psyched by the site, I like seeing all the other marketing initiatives that the firm is doing. The navigation is still a little tough. Add a site map. The content is still strong. And I still love the internet case digest! I just get the feeling that the site does not have the same oomph it once did.
Bracewell & Giuliani 4 4 4 4 5 21
Poor Patterson. Mayor Rudy shows up and the whole firm name changes. The site has the standard fare, but nothing that really stood out as exceptional. I found it odd that the energy legal blog was not referenced on the energy practice page. The site just does not carry the pow, the pop, the bang, the wam that I expect from a firm of this size.

Outside of hitting the very rare “pain in my rear end FRAMES”, this is yet another site that is better than it looks. It was interesting that a bunch of the home page-highlighted white papers required me to join the mailing list. There are many that simply will skip it and move on. CLE/Seminars is still a great strength. A lot of the pubs are even older than when I complained about them the last time. Still not up to speed.

I was certainly intrigued by the home page link to “Please click here for information regarding The Petition for Executive Clemency on behalf of Stanley Tookie Williams.” If you are involved in a high profile matter, make sure people know about it. Usually. The icon celebrating 176 years of excellence was a little odd. Do you change it to 177 next year, or what? I get the feeling this firm is really “old school”. But, to be honest, I have nothing to base that on except the feel I get from the site and what is highlighted. I can feel it. I was pleased to type in curtismallet.com and get to cm-p.com—being a really odd domain.

The “Upcoming Events” page listed four events—three from 2005 and one in 2004. Last I checked my calendar it was February 2006 on review day! Define “upcoming” at GDC. I’m not in love with the home page. Overall, the site is so-so. The clear focus of time and energy was on recruiting. I’m not saying that is misguided. However, recruits do like to see what the firm is up to, beyond the “sell”.

KR goes with the theme “local results; national resources.” Seems to be the theme of many Midwestern firms. Is it really necessary to tell people that the Midwest has access to stuff they have in NY? How about… “we practice law the same; do not charge you out the…” The KR artwork is still present in a PDF brochure, but the design is a little substandard. Content is fine, but the site lacks zip. There are some pages with serious scrolling issues. OK, but not super.
